A High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) workshop was held from the 8th – 11th May, 2010 at the clinical laboratory of the Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC). Participants were mainly laboratory scientists drawn from four African countries, namely: Burkina Faso (Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé), Cameroon (University of Yaoundé), Ghana (Kintampo Health Research Centre) and Mali (Malaria Research and Training Center).

The training was organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for sites participating in the African Malaria Nutrition Initiative (AMANI) project. The project is aimed at evaluating the effect of Vitamin A and Zinc supplementation on morbidity in children. The training consisted of lectures and practical sessions on use and maintenance of the equipment (HPLC machine), vitamin A metabolism and laboratory analysis. Vitamin A levels in blood samples collected during the project will be analysed in the laboratories of each of the participating countries.

Prof. Sherry Tanumihardjo from the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Wisconsin – Madison, USA, facilitated the training. Prof. Tanumihardjo has several years experience in methods of vitamin A analysis.

At a closing ceremony, Prof Tanumihardjo mentioned that the project was started about four years ago and she very excited that finally the HPLC machines were in the various laboratories. She further said it was a privilege to visit KHRC for the training. The participants were grateful for the training and promised to put the knowledge they had gained into good use in their respective laboratories.

Dr. Sam Newton, a Clinical Research Fellow at KHRC indicated that Prof. Tanumihardjo has been a constant help to the centre in diverse ways and it was a great moment seeing her. He thanked her for all that she had done for the institution.

Dr. Seth Owusu-Agyei, Director of the Kintampo Health Research Centre thanked Prof. Tanumihardjo for the knowledge imparted to the participants. He urged the participants to make the best use of this knowledge in their respective countries.
